This week’s challenge was creating a custom elearning glossary for our products.

Glossaryies are used so the learners can quickly look up definitions of words, terms, and industry-specific phrases.

Why a custom eLearning glossary?

As always, I can stress how well-thought Storyline360 is made. Articulate Storyline 360 includes many pre-made interactions for navigational purposes, such as menus, navigation buttons, subtitles, and glossaries. But in most cases, my clients require a custom solution that aligns better with their brand identity. Hence, I decided to create a custom glossary and share it with the world for this challenge.

Development & Visuals

If you have ever created a custom Glossary, you know that you essentially have to group the individual terms into larger categories and avoid having a massive list of items. The most obvious approach would be to group the items based on the letter they start.

This is precisely what I did in this case. Essentially, each letter will be a different category, where the various terms will be nested.

No matter how you group your terms, you must have as many slides or layers as the number of categories.

After I decided how the terms would be grouped, I went to my Slide Master tab and created a button that represents the Glossary. This will make the Glossary button to be present whenever I choose this particular Master Slide for my regular Slides.

It's also important for the Glossary to be placed within the Master Slides, so you can make adaptations and insert new terms easily.

Now a few words about a common question I am being asked by fellow elearning developers. Most visuals were made with Create Studio Pro and then imported within Storyline. It’s a nice software that I highly recommend.
