A budget solution for developing a questionnaire that reported to an LRS instead of an LMS, using xAPI custom commands.

The client wanted us to design and develop a playful-looking questionnaire that included gamified interactions, for their learners. As a result, Google Forms, which is not much customisable, was not an option. Besides, the client’s budget was limited, so paid services for a custom-made questionnaire were not an option either. Additionally, the client didn’t have an LMS to host the custom questionnaire. Just a webpage.

How we approached the development of the custom Questionnaire

To address the above issues, we developed a custom xAPI Questionnaire, essentially a regular questionnaire developed within Articulate Storyline 360.

  1. So, we used Articulate Storyline 360 to develop the questionnaire and created xAPI functions to grab the learners’ responses.
  2. We created an account at https://lrs.io/home, which is a free LRS, and using a bit of programming, we connected our xAPI questionnaire with the LRS.
  3. Then, we exported the questionnaire as a web object and send it to the client to host it on their webpage.
  4. The learners, after visiting the specific URL of the questionnaire, answered it, and their responses were automatically stored in the LRS.
  5. The client could view all the results they need within the LRS.
