Flipgrid is a video discussion platform which allows the sharing of user-generated videos, among groups of people. It is currently used in over 50,000 classrooms to empower students and ignite discussion.

What is Flipgrid ?

The process is really easy. In Flipgrid, teachers post discussion topics to which students then reply using videos. Learners can pause and flip their camera while recording, add pictures or documents, trim unlimited clips and include a whiteboard, video styles, text, emoji, inking to their stories. Teachers and students can post replies to videos, like them and provide feedback to their peers. Every video along with its replies forms a Grid. Grids are the meeting place for classrooms, schools, departments or any learning community to discuss specific topics. Those Grids can be easily embedded in a variety of other platforms such as Wordpress, Moodle etc.

Technical details

No fee is required to enjoy Flipgrid. All that you need is a Google or Microsoft account and the link code to your classroom’s Grid. This code is provided by the creator of the Grid, most often the teacher. Obviously to effectively use it, it’s necessary to own a camera and a microphone.

Note that it works great in both Android and iOS devices, since there is an application for both respective platforms.  There is no need to download an app if you don’t want to since Flipgrid works great on web browsers too.

Learning Theory

Flipgrid creates a social learning environment that provides every student an equal voice and ultimately increasing engagement. Students who would normally have reservations in participating in class now have a platform for their voice.

The increasing popularity of short video based communication such as Snapchat and Instagram fosters the implementation of Flipgrid into classroom environment. This practice allows students to communicate and learn through a medium they are familiar with can improve knowledge retention. Besides, learner creativity flourishes as they record authentic videos based on the topics of interest. It should be mentioned that there is an option to extend the boundaries of a Grid by connecting with other educators and learners across the globe. Thousands of teachers and students are eager to join you and your community in rich discussions to build a more supportive, collaborative and empathetic world. Since students construct their own understanding in a shared social setting, it may said that Flipgrid fits well into the theory of social constructivism, where students form communities of learning.

Conclusion

All in all, Flipgrid is an extraordinary app for teachers and students to communicate asynchronously, share their thoughts, acquire skills of social interaction, and express their emotions. It can be used in a variety of settings, from ice-breaking activities to language learning classrooms and promotes social learning and increases student engagement.
