The #ELHC370 challenge for the e-learning heroes community is pretty interesting. The task is to create an example of how web objects can be used in eLearning courses.

What are Web Objects, you may ask

Web objects are used for loading external content within the course.

This way, the learner doesn’t have to leave the course to visit the external resource. Thus, the learner’s potential distractions, from switching from tab to tab, are reduced, leaving space for the proper knowledge acquisition.

What activities to load as web objects

Well, the answer is simple. It is up to you. The choices are limitless. I personally love using web objects whenever I want to share a resource or interaction that I can’t replicate within Articulate Storyline.

For example, such resources are:

  • Google Street view items,
  • Surveymonkey’s forms,
  • Padlet’s walls, etc.

Besides, you can use web objects to load other websites that contain clues for questions. Check out my Space Adventure Game to view more about this. There is a question requiring the learner to find a hint hidden within my web page. Pretty cool, right?

Web objects can also help you create interactions that you can’t replicate otherwise in Storyline.

Ok, what about your example?

So, for this challenge, I decided to look at Serbia. Serbia is one of the most beautiful and most underrated countries in the Balkans. Serbia’s culture is great and its people are great. The same goes for Serbia’s history. Did you know that Serbia is home to two great castles?  Belgrade and Nis castles.  Well, I certainly didn’t, as I’ve never been to Serbia. But, with the help of Google Street view, I managed to visit these castles virtually and used them in my example for you to see them too.

So, I found both locations on Google Street view, and then I imported each of those, using iframes, within Storyline. Super cool, right?

That was all, folks. Hope you liked it. See ya next week!
